Overall Responsibility
Under the direct supervision of the Residential Coordinator and Overnight Supervisors, the Overnight Professional is responsible for the health and safety of all assigned students during the overnight hours. Specifically the Overnight Professional is responsible for the clinical and medical management of each student in the residence and must remain awake during the overnight hours to ensure students’ safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Educational/Clinical
- Remain awake and alert at all times while on duty; continuously monitor the health, safety and well-being of each student
- Thorough knowledge and competent implementation of all student educational programs and behavior management guidelines
- Diligent implementation of all medical, safety, and emergency procedures
- Record and complete all necessary behavioral and educational research data accurately and in a timely fashion, as specified by the Program Specialist, Residential Coordinator and/or Overnight Supervisor
- Complete all assigned direct teaching duties during early evening (7:00-8:00 p.m.) weekends and/or early morning (7:00-8:00 a.m.) weekdays
Schedule
- The schedule includes a 4-day (Saturday-Tuesday or Tuesday-Friday) 40-hour overnight workweek.
- While typically assigned to a single residence, staffing needs across the entire program will occasionally require Overnights to work in a location other than the primary assignment.
- Floaters and Modified Floaters
- Such staff will work a varied schedule and will work in any residence as needed. These hours typically vary from night to night and week to week.
- Floaters are required to communicate with a supervisor prior to each scheduled shift in order to receive their assignment.
Training and Professional Development
- Complete a 90 day probationary period in which trainee demonstrates competence in all duties related to the overnight position as stipulated by this job description and adheres to all policies and procedures of The New England Center for Children
- Successful completion of NECC trainings associated with initial employment (i.e. student management guidelines, medical and emergency procedures, student-specific physical intervention techniques, observation and behavior analysis training). Training may include sessions and observations during the day hours
- Participation and successful completion of refreshers (in-service training seminars) covering a variety of topics when offered. Some of these trainings occur outside of the regular work hours. It is paid training
- Successful completion of Medication Administration training and refreshers and accurately deliver medications following NECC protocol
- Successful completion of CALM Verbal and CALM Physical and ongoing refresher trainings
- Establish CPR and First Aid certification within the first 6 months of employment and ensure re-certification when necessary in order to remain active and on duty
Team
- Maintain communication with colleagues on both the overnight and day shift regarding clinical management and other student needs and issues
- Participate in bi-weekly conferences with the Residential Coordinator or Overnight Supervisors offering ideas, suggestions or solutions regarding clinical issues and overnight team organization. This includes recommendations for individual student clinical and educational programming
- Launder, dry and fold student clothing, towels and bedding as required
- Create and complete iemployee timesheets on a bi-weekly basis and submit to supervisor for approval
Supervision/Evaluation
- Receive supervision from the Overnight Supervisors and the Residential Coordinators
- Receive performance reviews, to be conducted annually
Physical
The physical requirements here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of all direct care teaching and overnight positions.
- Protective holds, movements and carries
- Blocking and redirecting student movements against the student’s weight (40-250 pounds)
- Physical interventions in response to aggressive and self-injurious behavior
- Ability to move quickly and confidently to intervene in situations when protective holds and/or movements are deemed necessary
- Ability to pursue a bolting student
- Successful completion of CALM training (non-violent self-defense), including but not limited to: pivoting, knee squats, shuffling front and backwards, carrying people, assisting a person to the floor, stabilizing people in a standing, seated, prone and supine positions.
General
All direct care overnight positions at NECC include but are not limited to:
- The operation of household appliances and equipment
- Implementation of all safety and emergency procedures
Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Flexibility and the ability to respond to all clinical, medical or scheduling problems as they arise
- Task-oriented and the ability to follow instructions in both verbal and written form.
- Ability to remain awake and alert on the overnight hours, including lengthy shifts (up to 14 hours regularly scheduled)
- Experience working with special needs populations and/or awake overnight shifts preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle.
