Staff Spotlight: Melanie Heath

Melanie Heath, a Level 2 Teacher/Case Manager (CSM) on Oak Street, has worked at NECC since 2023. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because Melanie always brings the best energy to help everyone. She arrives early to work to start the day off right, and she consistently goes above and beyond in helping students succeed in their classes and advocating for them. She is a great resource for teachers and is the first to step in when someone needs help. Melanie is a valuable asset to Oak Street, and we are very fortunate to have her.”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I’ve worked at NECC for almost three years. I started as an intern on a residential team in 2023, then completed a second internship in 2024 before coming back to work full time in 2025.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is the endless opportunities that are offered at NECC. I especially enjoy being part of such a welcoming, supportive, and caring work environment. I take great pride in being a case manager at NECC, as it has significantly contributed to my professional growth by helping me develop a greater understanding of the importance of commitment, communication, and collaboration in ensuring student success.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I chose a career in helping children with autism because I’ve always wanted to advocate for those who may not be able to advocate for themselves.

Why NECC?

NECC is truly one of a kind. I’ve had many positive experiences as a Level 2 Teacher that have significantly contributed to my dedication to this field. I graduated college with a concentration in behavior analysis and a desire to continue practicing in the field of applied behavior analysis. NECC has given me the opportunities to fulfill those goals and has helped me get to where I am today.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

I’m currently enrolled in the Simmons University Master’s program. Throughout the classes I’ve taken in the program so far, I have already had the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned both in and outside of the classroom.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

The first job I ever had was as an assistant dance teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching tap and ballet to three- to five-year-olds. That experience led me down the path to education. It inspired me to work with children and, most importantly, to support and advocate for their personal growth and independence. I’ve always aspired to make a difference in the world, and through teaching, I believe I can accomplish that at NECC.

Who is someone you look up to?

I look up to my Education Coordinator on Oak Street, Amanda MacVicar-Corbett, who also completed the Simmons program.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

My life philosophy is, “Nothing lasts forever.”
