Staff Spotlight: Michaela McMillan

Michaela McMillan, MSEd, a Lead Teacher/Coordinator in our partner classroom program in Barnstable, MA, has worked at NECC for four years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because Michaela is always advocating for her students while at the same time educating staff members who may not be familiar with the NECC partner program. She is always putting student needs first, and that is at the forefront of her decision-making. Even when going through more challenging times in the classroom, the students’ well-being and education always took precedence.”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have been working for NECC for four years, both at the Southborough campus and now in a partner program classroom.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love getting to be a part of the incredible growth and progress our students make every day.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

My journey into autism education began during the COVID-19 pandemic when I worked in an elementary sub-separate program. During that time, I saw the value of students learning from one another’s differences.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

My colleagues might be surprised to learn that I originally planned to pursue a career in sports journalism.

Why NECC?

I chose NECC because I believe deeply in its mission and have seen the incredible impact its resources have on the lives of students and their families, not only on the Southborough campus, but across Cape Cod as well.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

Through NECC, I completed the Simmons Master’s Program, where I learned how to collaborate with other educators, practice culturally responsive teaching, and create inclusive classrooms for both students and staff.

Who is someone you look up to?

By working at NECC, I have met some of my best friends! I’ve also been so fortunate to work alongside incredible clinicians, including Amy Bauman, Allison Bergenholtz, Jillian Baldwin, Lauren Carr, and so many more, whose dedication and expertise continue to inspire me every day.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by? A motto I try to live by is, “All of us are different; none of us are less.”
