Staff Spotlight: Lindsay Ward, MSEd

Lindsay Ward, MSEd., an education coordinator for The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Intensive Instruction Program (IIP), has worked at NECC for three years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because she “goes above and beyond and brings strong organizational skills and progress monitoring to the team. She is kind in all of her interactions and always puts the good of the students and team first. Most recently, she has helped with starting up reverse integration to provide our youngest students at NECC with opportunities to socialize and learn with neurotypical peers from the preschool classrooms! We are grateful to have Lindsay as a part of our team!”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I’ve worked at NECC for three years. I started as a level 2 teacher on Cohort E on the IIP and have been the education coordinator on Cohort A for the past year.

What is your favorite part of your job?

It is such an honor to come here each day and work with the students and the team. I feel so fortunate to work alongside such amazing colleagues. Watching students learn new skills and hearing families share how they’ve seen that growth at home is certainly one of my favorite parts of my job. I’m grateful every day to be a part of a dedicated team that makes this school such an incredible place for our students, families, and each other.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My original plan was to teach high school math. However, I shifted my career plans following an internship during my undergraduate program and decided to go into the fashion and textiles industry instead. After a few years, I decided to return to teaching. At the start of my journey, I was a teacher’s assistant in a special education classroom, though I was not familiar with working with individuals with autism. Since then, I’ve learned so much from all the places I’ve worked and know this is the right career for me.

Why NECC?

My colleagues at my last workplace were the first to tell me about NECC. Once I moved from New York to Massachusetts, I knew I wanted to join the NECC team. I’ve been so impressed by the incredible resources and support NECC offers to both its staff and students.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

I am currently enrolled in the Western New England University (WNEU) applied behavior analysis (ABA) specialization program. I’ve gained valuable skills in applying ABA principles directly to my teaching, which has improved my support in the classroom for students and teachers.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

Something they might be surprised to know is that I worked in the fashion industry for a few years prior to making a career change to education! Outside of work, I enjoy painting and have been learning to sew clothes.

Who is someone you look up to?

I’ve always looked up to my sister. She has consistently taught me the invaluable lesson of staying authentic and true to myself.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

I like to live by the philosophy that life gets busy, but everything always works out. Just be sure to find a moment to laugh and smile each day!
