Lee Backstrom, a Team Administrative Coordinator in Adult Services, has worked at NECC for about four years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because Lee is an exceptionally hard worker. She is always taking on new tasks to support the teams she oversees. Lee never hesitates to help where needed and assists on shift across all teams in the department. Since joining Adult Services, Lee has built strong and meaningful relationships with consumers across the department and with staff members. She is a valued member of the department!” 

How long have you worked for NECC?

I’ve worked at NECC for almost four years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love seeing the consumers out and about in the community, working at vocational sites, and working to increase their independence. I also really enjoy seeing some of my old students from the Intensive Instruction Program (IIP) who stop by my office to say hello; it is awesome to see the progress they have been making.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I was a swim instructor at a swimming school, and an individual with autism was kicked out of class. Seeing that, I started my own swim class for individuals with autism. I found great satisfaction in that and wanted to expand my newfound skills outside of the pool. I started working in a public school and then stumbled across the New England Center for Children, and the rest is history.

There are too many amazing people at NECC to pick one. I have worked with some of the best people here.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

The philosophy that I like to live my life by is, “We will make it work.”
