Staff Spotlight: Joy Adeniyi
Joy Adeniyi, MAEd, a Rehabilitation Counselor and Core Shift Manager (CSM) on Westborough 1, has worked at NECC for two years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because she is a valuable member of the team. Joy has stepped into the role of CSM with great optimism; she is always in everyone’s corner and loves cheering on the students.”
How long have you worked for NECC?
I joined NECC in March 2024, relocating from Nigeria to pursue my passion for working with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is having the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, while working alongside an incredible team of dedicated professionals. I enjoy building strong relationships with my students, getting to know their behavior guidelines, unique personalities, and strengths, and helping them develop the skills they need to become as independent as possible. As a member of a graduating residential team, it is especially rewarding to teach and encourage life skills that prepare our students for adulthood. I also value the collaborative nature of the work, partnering with colleagues to create a supportive and consistent environment where our students can thrive.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
In many ways, I believe this career chose me. In October 2012, during a final interview for what I thought would be a classroom teaching position, I was informed that the only available opening was for a Special Educational Needs Teacher working with two children diagnosed with autism. That was the very first time I heard the word “autism.” My curiosity led me to accept the role, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. Since then, my journey has been incredibly rewarding, educational, and inspiring. Every year has deepened my understanding of autism and strengthened my passion for helping individuals reach their fullest potential.
Why NECC?
NECC’s mission of transforming the lives of individuals with autism through education, research, and technology aligns perfectly with my professional goals and personal values. I am passionate about evidence-based practices, promoting independence, and creating meaningful outcomes for students and their families. NECC’s commitment to excellence, staff development, and innovation provides an environment where I can continue to grow as an educator and behavior analyst while contributing to a team that is making a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve. Being part of an organization that values both student success and professional growth makes NECC an ideal place for me to build my career.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
I recently completed my BCBA coursework and supervision requirements and am currently preparing to take the BCBA exam. I am also a Certified International Behavior Analyst (IBA). The training and supervision experience have significantly enhanced my teaching style by helping me become more data-driven, analytical, and intentional in my decision-making. I have gained a deeper understanding of behavior principles and how to use them to create individualized, effective teaching strategies. The experience has strengthened my ability to assess student needs, collaborate with team members, and ensure that interventions are both evidence-based and socially significant. Overall, it has made me a more confident and effective educator and leader.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
Many people might be surprised to learn that I am highly self-motivated. Once I set a goal, I remain focused and committed until I achieve it. Moving from Nigeria to the United States, pursuing advanced credentials, and continuously seeking opportunities for growth all reflect that determination.
Who is someone you look up to?
I look to the Holy Spirit for His teaching, guidance, wisdom, comfort, and divine direction. Through every season of my life and career, I have found strength and encouragement through His leading, and He has never failed me.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
Two quotes that guide my life are: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) and “What God cannot do does not exist.” These reminders inspire me to approach challenges with faith, perseverance, and confidence that anything is possible through God’s strength and guidance.
