Senior Human Resources (HR) Specialist Linda Donahue, MSEd, joined The New England Center for Children (NECC) as a teacher more than three decades ago. She was nominated by a colleague because she “is a dedicated employee who goes above and beyond. She has a calm demeanor and friendly personality that staff appreciate. We are very lucky to have her at NECC.”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have worked for NECC for 33 years as of August 2023. In my time here I have served in the positions of: Teacher, Residential Coordinator, Director of Residential Services, Administrative Specialist, College Recruiter, HR Specialist, Director of Recruiting, Senior HR Specialist.

Why did you decide to move from being a teacher to HR?

I am naturally attracted to human engagement and have really enjoyed meeting hundreds of people in my various roles at NECC. College recruiting was my introduction to HR, and I’m now learning more about the benefits side of HR.

Why NECC?

I had a college friend working at NECC when I graduated from Assumption College (now Assumption University), and he had told me really interesting stories about his work. I was intrigued and signed on to work at NECC the same year. The rest is history!

Why did you choose a career helping children with autism?

I was a regular education major but found that I did not enjoy large class format. The smaller ratio of one teacher to two to three students worked out well for me.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Meeting new staff, especially international staff from all over the world and helping to them to acclimate to NECC and the U.S. is my favorite part.

What has kept you at NECC so long?

I truly believe in NECC’s mission. NECC is my community; it’s a big part of the fabric of my life.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC during your tenure?

I’m a Simmons College graduate (now Simmons University) and hold a Master of Science in Severe Special Needs Education.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

I like to take long distance road trips on the back of my husband’s motorcycle, with my husband of course. The Canadian Maritime provinces are a favorite destination.

Who is someone you look up to?

My siblings. Being the youngest of 13 children, I’ve always had someone to emulate for most challenges in life.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

I choose to be happy.
