Staff Spotlight: Maddie Berning, MS
Maddie Berning, MS, a Residential Coordinator on School Street, has worked at The New England Center for Children (NECC) since December 2021. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because she’s dedicated, motivated, and efficient. She is a key component of the clinical team and does a great job balancing all of her responsibilities with a positive attitude. Maddie is a great team player, and even more so, she is a great team leader.”
How long have you worked for NECC?
I started as an intern during my undergraduate studies in December 2021 and returned to NECC as a full-time employee immediately after my internship ended.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is working directly with our students to provide the support and encouragement they need to grow.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
I chose a career helping children with autism because I love to see our students accomplish their goals surrounded by such hard-working clinicians and educators.
Why NECC?
NECC has been a constant source of support throughout my academic and professional journey, beginning with my undergraduate experience in Virginia and continuing through graduate school. Their encouragement played a meaningful role in my earning a Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and I am so grateful!
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
Through the Western New England University (WNEU) program, I have learned amazing things from instructors that are directly applicable to what we do on the floor with our students.
Who is someone you look up to?
I look up to all the amazing coordinators, trainers, and shift managers who patiently welcomed me onto my team back when I was brand new. I learned things during my first few months that have carried me through each shift years later. Continuing a career here at NECC has been an easy decision thanks to the many helping hands that brought me where I am today!
