Staff Spotlight: Linda Havener
Linda Havener, a Health Services Officer, has worked at NECC for 37 years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because our department would not be able to run without her! Linda does everything for our department! She books all students’ appointments, answers phones, handles all insurance tasks, fixes everything that breaks, solves all of our computer issues, and greets everyone who enters the department with a smile on her face, just to name a few of her tasks. We are ever grateful for her hard work and dedication to our department and the school as a whole!”
How long have you worked for NECC?
When I first applied to NECC, I was hired for a part-time position in the Health Services Department back in 1988. At that time, there was one NP (Director of Health Services), 4 RNs, and me. There were no computers, only typewriters and mimeograph machines. Over the years, the hours and responsibilities increased, the title changed (Administrative Assistant to Administrative Specialist to Office Manager), as did the staff, from 5 medical professionals to 18.
Why NECC?
In 1988, the job fit with my schedule and growing family. As the years went by, and our department grew, I enjoyed keeping the department up to date and organized.
What is your favorite part of your job?
With so many different aspects of my job, there is never a dull moment, and every day looks different. I enjoy assisting parents with insurance and billing issues, seeing students throughout the day, and working with an amazing department.
What are your duties working in health services?
Every day I wear many different hats within one job title: front desk receptionist (phones and window greeter), scheduler, medical referrals, billing and insurance issues, medical records, supplies, and administrator of our electronic health records.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
I have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren, I am a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, I love to bake and cook, and I have a daughter and niece who work at NECC!
Who is someone you look up to?
So many, my parents and grandparents, who raised me to respect all. They also taught me that if you do a job, do it to the best of your ability, no matter how small or big the task is. Also, my daughters who amaze me every day. They are all in service to others; one is a daycare provider, one is a nurse, and one is a high school math teacher. And lastly, my husband, who dedicates himself to volunteering for the Shriners Hospital for Children.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
There is good in everyone; sometimes you just must look a bit harder.
