Staff Spotlight: Keri Doucette, MS, OTR/L

Keri Doucette, MS, OTR/L, an occupational therapist for The New England Center for Children (NECC), has worked at NECC for nearly 13 years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because she is “very helpful, very warm, and makes sure to offer her help whenever it is needed.” The nominator added that she’s someone who makes you feel comfortable, someone from whom you’re not shy or intimidated to ask for something. “She always smiles and makes sure the staff and students have whatever they need!”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have worked as an occupational therapist at NECC for 12.5 years.

What are your duties as an occupational therapist?

Duties as an OT involve collaborating with the IEP team to develop functional goals and objectives in the areas of school performance and daily activities. These goals could be related to handwriting, self-care skills (e.g. fasteners, feeding), attention, sensory regulation, fine and gross motor skills, modifications of seating or utensils, and more!

What is your favorite part of your job?

There are many joys I experience every day at work. First, working with children and young adults, and the relationships we develop with our students goes beyond just “teacher.” The connections, the caring, and the bonds we create are so strong and rewarding. I also enjoy the special activities our department is involved in planning and executing, such as Field Day, Special Olympics, Fishin’ with a Mission, seasonal themes in the gymnasium, and student parties/dances.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I chose this field because it offers the chance to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I have always loved engaging with children, with and without disabilities. The joy of seeing children improve and thrive is a personal motivator.

Why NECC?

Prior to coming to NECC, I had made a career change from being a sales manager for Westin Hotels to working as a tutor/teacher for one of NECC’s partner classrooms in Milford, MA. I worked in the partner classroom but was hired by and worked for the town. Working in that role for three years, I learned so much about OT, PT, SLP, and special education, and I decided to pursue a master’s degree in occupational therapy from Worcester State. Upon graduation, I applied to NECC and accepted the job!

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

I completed my education before NECC, but each year NECC adds to my personal development and growth. NECC supports my participation in and provides funding for AOTA conferences and other continuing educational opportunities.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

The majority of my colleagues already know this, but I am originally from Canada, and I say ‘Sorry’ all the time!

Who is someone you look up to?

I have always looked up to my father. Although he is no longer living, he continues to guide me through life.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

Be. Here. Now.
