Staff Spotlight: Jenice Cruz

Jenice Cruz, a level 2 teacher and core shift manager (CSM) for The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) School Street residence, has worked at NECC for nearly three years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because “she is really dedicated to her work, her students, and her colleagues. She will go the extra mile to make everyone feel comfortable.”

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is working with my team to find solutions, and watching my students make meaningful progress. When I first started at NECC, I was focused strictly on work and school and didn’t expect to form close relationships with my coworkers. However, over time, my School Street team has become like a family to me. Being far from my home in the Philippines, they’ve truly become my chosen family.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
I chose this career because I see this work as a calling, something that is deeply meaningful and purposeful. I’ve always loved working with children, and helping them grow feels like a mission close to my heart.

Why NECC?
I chose NECC because it gave me the opportunity to grow professionally through its partnership with Western New England University (WNEU). The graduate school support that is offered has been key to advancing my career.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
Yes, I recently earned my master’s in applied behavior analysis from the WNEU program. The program has deepened my understanding of why we do what we do. It’s helped me grasp the rationale behind our procedures and has given me a more thoughtful, informed approach to teaching.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

Something they might be surprised to learn is that I’m also a graphic artist. It’s a creative outlet that brings me joy outside of work.

Who is someone you look up to?
Professionally, I admire my colleagues and supervisors. Personally, my biggest inspiration is my mom. She’s the best!

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
“Leave everything better than you found it.”
