Staff Spotlight: Ashley Collins
Ashley Collins, a Level 2 Teacher, Core Shift Manager, and Graduate Assistant on Higley Road, has worked at The New England Center for Children (NECC) since 2023. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because she is a real definition of who we call a Higley hero. She has a positive attitude to work, she supports everyone around her, and she makes everyone feel heard, no matter how long you’ve been on the team.”
How long have you worked for NECC?
I first joined NECC as a summer intern in 2023. After graduating from undergrad, I returned the following summer as a Level 2 Teacher and Graduate Assistant.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is seeing the meaningful impact our work has on our students’ lives.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?
I chose a career in helping children with autism because I want to support and help every child I work with live a fuller, more independent life. Being part of their growth is incredibly meaningful to me. This career is rewarding every single day; whether the progress is a small step or a major milestone, every success matters.
Why NECC?
I chose NECC because, after completing my summer internship, I saw firsthand how working here allows me to make a positive difference in the lives of children with autism. Additionally, I knew NECC would provide me with the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and skills in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
I have taken advantage of the master’s program in ABA offered at NECC through Western New England University. This opportunity has positively influenced my teaching style by allowing me to deepen my knowledge of ABA. Being immersed in an environment where I work alongside and learn from experts in ABA allows me to continuously gain new knowledge.
Who is someone you look up to?
Someone I look up to is my mom. She inspires me every day through her hard work and dedication to her career, as well as her ability to balance caring for our family. My mom’s selfless nature and habit of always putting others before herself demonstrate her unwavering commitment to helping those around her. I believe my own desire to help others comes from her example.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
Something my colleagues might be surprised to learn about me is that I enjoy line dancing.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
Robert Browning’s quote, “The best is yet to be,” reminds me that even when life feels difficult in the present, there is always room for growth, improvement, achievement, and fulfillment in the future. It suggests that what lies ahead holds greater potential than what has already passed, encouraging both hope and perseverance. Even during challenging times, this quote reassures us that our best moments may still be ahead.
