Ellie Storey, a residential coordinator on The New England Center for Children’s (NECC) Francine Road residential team, has worked at NECC for three years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because “since she joined our team, she has been effective at taking on staff feedback and quickly implementing it, which has greatly improved and fostered better communication, teamwork, and a strong and positive work ethic. The genuine concern and approach she has taken on numerous occasions has given me the confidence and motivation to excel in the work I do at NECC. Her leadership has been excellent.”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have worked at NECC for three years. I started as a level 2 teacher on School Street, where I was a case manager and backup core shift manager before moving to my current position as a residential coordinator.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is the rapport we are able to build with our students. We spend so much time with them and see all their highs and lows. It is so rewarding to help them reach their fullest potential and to see our work have an impact on their daily lives.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I have always been drawn to a career working with kids, and I also love science and research. I love how applied our work is and how everything we do is data-driven. I spent years as a camp counselor, babysitting, and teaching, and I have found that working with kids is something that makes me feel fulfilled, confident, and energized.

Why NECC?

I came to, and have stayed at, NECC for the people. Beginning with my interview process and training, I have found great mentors and friends at NECC who have guided my career path thus far. There are so many amazing leaders and role models at NECC.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

I am in my second year of the Western New England University (WNEU) master’s degree program in applied behavior analysis (ABA). I have learned so much in this program, and it has tremendously contributed to my growth as a teacher and residential coordinator. Being able to study something in class and then the next day practice it on the floor is an amazing way to learn. I have become a more effective teacher and supervisor thanks to the WNEU program.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

Something that might surprise them is that I love sports and exercise! I played basketball in college, and I teach spin classes at my gym. I have run the Falmouth Road Race for Team NECC the last two years, and it has been a highlight of my time here.

Who is someone you look up to?

I look up to my Mom!

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

I love the quote, “If you do something out of duty, it will deplete you, but if you do something out of love, it will energize you.”
