Staff Spotlight: Vanessa Cervantes

Vanessa Cervantes, a rehabilitation counselor for The New England Center for Children’s Westborough 2 residential team, has worked at NECC for a year and a half. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because “she is selfless and very dedicated to the students’ progress. Vanessa is a very hardworking teacher.”
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is seeing the progress and growth of the children I work with. Even the smallest accomplishments feel so meaningful, and it’s rewarding to know I play a role in helping them achieve their goals.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism? Why NECC?
I chose this career because I’ve always been passionate about supporting children and empowering them to reach their full potential. Working with children with autism is especially meaningful because every child learns and grows in unique ways. I chose NECC because of its strong reputation in autism education, research, and the supportive environment it provides for both students and staff.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
Not currently, but I look forward to exploring these opportunities in the future to continue building my skills and growing as a professional.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
Something they might now know is that I love cooking and enjoy trying out new recipes whenever I have the chance.
Who is someone you look up to?
I look up to my family, especially my nephew who is on the spectrum. He reminds me of the importance of patience, resilience, and celebrating the small victories in life.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
“Small steps lead to big progress.” I believe that growth doesn’t always come all at once, but with patience, consistency, and effort, even the smallest steps forward make a huge difference.
