Staff Spotlight: Mel D’Angelo

Mel D’Angelo, administration coordinator for The New England Center for Children (NECC), has been at NECC for six years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague because she “goes above and beyond in her role. She is extremely hardworking and kind to everyone. NECC is lucky to have her!”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have been with NECC for six and a half years. I began as a Level 2 teacher on Saddle Hill Road, where I served as a case manager, education coordinator assistant, and backup core shift manager. After that, I transitioned to the position of team administrative coordinator for the ITT and now serve as an administration coordinator.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Although I no longer work directly with our students, my favorite part of the job is being able to see the progress our students make, whether that is big or small. The work that is done here is clearly very impactful to our students and their families and loved ones’ lives.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I initially sought a career in higher education and student affairs. However, after completing my master’s degree in human development and family studies from the University of Rhode Island, I decided that I wanted to try something different, though I was not completely sure what. During my undergraduate experience at Western New England University (WNEU), we frequently talked about NECC in the classroom, which sparked my interest, and I decided to give NECC a try. I felt like NECC was the right fit for me. As I have progressed through various positions here, including my current role on the administrative side of NECC, I’ve had the opportunity to use the knowledge and experiences I gained in graduate school.

Why NECC?

NECC was an opportunity that came up for me at a time when I was not sure where my future career would take me after finishing graduate school. For that, I will always be thankful!
