Lauren Materia, Social Media Coordinator in the Development Department, has been a valued member of the NECC community for the past two and a half years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because whether she is capturing content for social media, supporting colleagues, or engaging with students, Lauren brings warmth, positivity, and enthusiasm to everything she does. 

Known for her bright smile and friendly personality, Lauren has a remarkable ability to make others feel welcome and appreciated. Colleagues often note that she takes the time to introduce herself to new people and somehow remembers everyone’s name. Her genuine interest in others and commitment to fostering connections help create a sense of belonging throughout the organization. 

Lauren is also one of the first people to raise her hand when help is needed. Whether volunteering to support a team, assisting with special events, or helping spread awareness of NECC’s programs and services, she approaches every opportunity with energy and purpose. Her dedication stems from a deep appreciation for the students, staff, and mission of NECC. 

Within the Development Department, Lauren plays an important role in celebrating colleagues by organizing recognition for birthdays and milestones. She is generous with praise, quick to express gratitude, and always eager to acknowledge the contributions of others. Her thoughtful actions help strengthen morale and build a culture of appreciation. 

Lauren’s commitment to inclusion is evident through her service as an Employee Resource Group (ERG) Ambassador. She is particularly active with the Wellness ERG and recently led a “Learn to Jump Rope” workshop that brought together more than 30 staff members and family members for a fun and engaging wellness activity.

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have been a part of the NECC community since November 2023, and it has truly been such a meaningful experience. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of an organization that is so dedicated to making a difference in the lives of students, families, and staff. 

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is seeing creativity and storytelling come to life. I love having the opportunity to work alongside our teachers, staff, students, and families to help share the incredible stories happening across NECC. Every photo, video, and post represents a bigger story of progress, connection, and impact. I always say that together, we are all telling the NECC story, and I am so grateful to be able to help share those moments with our community. 

Why NECC?

NECC is truly a special place. I always hoped to work for an organization that was mission-driven and gave me the opportunity to contribute to something greater than myself. In my role, that often looks like capturing a moment of a student making progress and sharing that story with their parents, caregivers, and the broader community. 

What makes NECC so meaningful to me are the connections, both internally with our incredible staff and externally with our families and supporters. Building those relationships has only made me feel more inspired and connected to the mission every day. 

I am also so grateful to my childhood friend, Shannon Rawson, who is a teacher at NECC for encouraging me to apply. It is a reminder that one conversation, one opportunity, or one decision can truly change the direction of your life. 

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

Many people might be surprised to learn that I used to be a competitive jump roper! I started jump rope when I was eight years old through an after-school enrichment program, and what started as a fun activity quickly became a huge part of my life. 

I began performing with my team, the Memorial School Skippers, and later continued with the Miscoe Hill Skippers and High Altitude Jump Rope Team. Along the way, my dad became my jump rope coach, which made the experience even more special. Having him by my side cheering me on, encouraging me, and helping me grow both as an athlete and as a person is something I will always be grateful for. 

One of my favorite memories was competing at Nationals in Dells, Wisconsin, during my senior year, where I placed 10th in my age bracket for Triple Unders. I also earned the first-place title for Region 10, which included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. 

It was so special to bring my love of jump rope full circle by hosting a Learn to Jump Rope Workshop at NECC this past March. Jump rope taught me so much about perseverance, confidence, teamwork, and the joy of trying something new, and I loved being able to share that same joy with my NECC colleagues. 

Who is someone you look up to?

I look up to many people in my life, but I would have to say my twin sister inspires me the most. Growing up together, she has always challenged me to dream bigger, believe in myself, and embrace every opportunity that comes my way. 

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

One quote that has always guided my life is, “She believed she could, so she did.” I believe there is so much power in recognizing the unique gifts we each bring into the world, whether that is in our workplace, our relationships, or our communities. We all have something meaningful to contribute, and I try to approach each day with curiosity, gratitude, and the belief that even small moments can create a big impact. I also believe in saying yes to opportunities, embracing new experiences, and trusting that the path we are on will lead us exactly where we are meant to be.
