Staff Spotlight: Jackie Gilman

Jackie Gilman, a Lead Tutor in one of NECC’s Partner Program classrooms in Milton, NH, has worked at NECC for six years. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because she’s an asset to the team here in Milton. She is always willing to pick up whatever student and do whatever is best for our students each day. As someone new to NECC, I am so grateful for the wisdom and confidence she brings to our classroom and how much she has helped me learn.”

How long have you worked for NECC?

I have worked at NECC for six years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is seeing the growth my students make over time. Whether it’s a small goal or a major milestone, each moment of progress is meaningful and worth celebrating.

Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism?

I initially discovered my passion for working with children with autism while I was in high school. Many of my friends were working at an Extended School Year summer program, and I joined simply to spend the summer with them. However, that experience quickly became much more meaningful. The students I worked with inspired me in ways I hadn’t expected, and it was through them that I developed a passion for education and supporting individuals with autism. That experience ultimately led me to pursue a career in this field.

Why NECC?

NECC offers numerous opportunities for professional growth while also providing strong support for its staff. The organization’s commitment to both student success and staff development makes it a truly unique place to work.

Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?

Yes, I completed the Simmons graduate program. This experience has strengthened my ability to develop a flexible and diverse teaching style, allowing me to effectively meet the wide range of needs of my students.

What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?

I am the 2025 Heniger Park cornhole champion.

Who is someone you look up to?

Based on my career at NECC, Josh Jackson has played a significant role in shaping the educator I am today. He laid the foundation for my teaching practice, and I strive to carry forward the skills and values he modeled while we worked together on the Intensive Treatment Team (ITT). He has extensive clinical knowledge, but what stands out most is his dedication to his students and their families. He consistently takes the time to support and mentor staff, which has had a lasting impact on me.

What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?

“Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.”
