Staff Spotlight: Carlo Martin
Carlo Martin, BCaBA, LABA, a Rehabilitation Counselor/Core Shift Manager (CSM) on Ursla Drive, has been at NECC for three years. He was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because his humor, support, care and thoughtfulness that he brings on board is amazing! The Ursla team is so blessed with super incredible teachers, and Mr. Carlo is one of them. He is such a great leader with listening ears. We love you Carlo, you’re the best!”
How long have you worked for NECC? Early next year will mark four years of my NECC journey.
What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is when I am with my students. Engaging with them and problem-solving ways to help them best learn skills that are functional and socially significant to them and to the community, skills that would lead to their happiness and independence.
Why did you choose a career in helping children with autism? Back in my day, growing up with a friend who is on the autism spectrum disorder, I witnessed some people in my community distancing themselves after learning about his neurodevelopmental condition and unique behavioral traits. This experience led me to take Special Education as an undergrad degree to help people of determination and individuals with special needs in general acquire important skills that would help them prepare for their future.
Why NECC? I chose NECC because its values align with mine. I admire the important work NECC does to support children on the autism spectrum and their families. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style? I am one of the few international staff members who were given the opportunity to continue my master’s program in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) outside of NECC through their educational reimbursement program. NECC also provided me with all the resources and support I needed to prepare for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam. Thank you for making this longtime dream come true soon.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn? I am the only child in the family who ventures abroad.
Who is someone you look up to? I look up to my Mom and Dad because they taught me the importance of hard work, patience, and perseverance. They inspire me to keep going even if life gets hard and to treat other with respect and compassion. I hope to carry these values with me in everything I do.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by? Live simply, dream big, stay grateful, and let life surprise you.
