50 Years of IDEA
On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, private special education schools from across the Commonwealth gathered for the MAAPS celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The event, held at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate in Boston, welcomed nearly 400 educators, legislators, families, and students.
Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll opened the program, followed by a series of government officials, educators, parents, and a student—each sharing their appreciation for and commitment to this vital legislation.
NECC’s own Liam C. was selected to introduce one of the featured speakers, Senator John Keenan, and represented our school admirably. Artwork created by several current students—Ethan, Kathryn, Luke, Margot, and Mia—was also showcased, thanks to Art Teacher Kassandra Hostage.
Beth McGonagle, Senior Director of Development and Communications, served on the IDEA 50th Working Group, helping plan the event and presented the art contest awards during the program.
