Staff Spotlight: Emily Downing
Emily Downing, a Waivered Special Education and Intensive Instruction Program Teacher on Cohort H, has worked at The New England Center for Children (NECC) for six months. She was nominated for Staff Spotlight by a colleague, “because she is always so positive and uplifting and advocates for all our students! She’s an amazing role model for the team who is always willing to help and is a great addition to the team!”
How long have you worked for NECC?
I have worked at NECC since July 2025.
Why NECC?
I was recommended for a position at NECC by one of my mentor teachers who had worked there previously. I knew that working at NECC would help me grow as a special education teacher by strengthening my skills and giving me experience supporting students with diverse needs. I especially appreciate how much the school emphasizes building student independence and providing job trials to help students prepare to work in the community.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is making a connection with the students and watching them achieve their goals.
Have you taken advantage of any of the grad programs or teacher training at NECC? If so, how has it affected your teaching style?
I am currently enrolled in the Simmons program, working toward my special education teaching license. I have only completed two classes so far, so I have not yet experienced significant changes from what I learned while earning my undergraduate teaching license.
What is something about you that your colleagues might be surprised to learn?
I was born in Colorado, and I’m a big Nuggets and Broncos fan!
Who is someone you look up to?
I look up to my mom, who has been a teacher for almost 30 years and has always inspired me to go into this career.
What is your life philosophy or motto you like to live by?
“Nothing is Impossible, even the word itself says ‘I’m possible’” – Audrey Hepburn
