The following projects are examples of research currently being conducted at NECC. For more information on any of these projects, please feel free to contact us via e-mail.

Assessment and Treatment of Stereotypic Behavior >>

NECC is currently conducting a series of studies focused on developing effective and lasting interventions for stereotypic behavior. This is defined as seemingly nonfunctional, repetitive movements or vocalizations that can interfere with skill acquisition and be socially stigmatizing. Each participant involved has his or her stereotypic behavior assessed in a controlled setting. Then a treatment is developed for them and their teachers are trained in implementing it. Two interventions - response interruption/redirection and response competition – have proven effective for several students.

Video Modeling >>

Play is an important part of a child’s development and contributes to the acquisition of vocal and communicative skills. Children with autism often do not learn typical play skills. NECC has been examining a technique called video modeling to effectively teach students how to engage in play time. A second study on teaching cooperative play between autistic children and their typical peers is also underway.

Preference and Reinforcer Assessment >>

An important focus of providing educational and clinical services to our students is to teach them how to make their wants and needs known to others. Currently, NECC is engaged in a number of different studies designed to assess the preferences of individuals with limited communication skills. One focuses on determining what skills are necessary for a student’s preferences to be assessed visually (through pictures or line-drawings), while another is attempting to answer the question of how often a student’s preferences should be assessed.
