The NECC Day School serves children ages 10 to 22 in specialized classrooms year-round, 5 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Most of the students in the regular day classroom reside within one hour of the central school building. This year-round program provides intensive instruction on a one teacher for every two students basis to provide high rates of learning opportunities.
Curriculum and Approach
The NECC curriculum focuses on communication, academic, social, play and self-help skills. It is taught using a combination of discrete trials and incidental learning opportunities guided by the teacher’s use of techniques based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. In the Regular Classroom, aiding the child in the development of communication skills is the highest priority. Academics, including reading, math, science and social studies are also offered in addition to a continued emphasis on social and self-help skills. As students get older, the NECC curriculum expands to functional life skills and vocational training. The vocational component is based on a supported employment model, with an emphasis on community jobs.
Parental Involvement
Parental involvement is strongly encouraged and training programs are offered, which enable the parents to aid in increasing the child’s ability to complete leisure and domestic routines in the home with a greater degree of independence.
