The curriculum at NECC is designed to
provide students with a wide range of
life, communication, leisure, academic,
social and vocational skills to help
prepare each child to live a productive
and fulfilling life with greater independence.
The NECC curriculum emphasizes the individual
needs of each child in order to develop
an educational plan that will achieve
the greatest results. Each piece of
NECC curriculum can be modified for
every child to reflect his or her individual
learning style. The student performance
data is reviewed regularly to insure
that students move rapidly through the
curriculum and that swift program modifications
are made as needed.

Academic
Instruction |
| |
Using the
Massachusetts Curriculum
Frameworks as a guide, NECC
provides academic instruction
in the areas of English/Language
Arts, History and Social
Sciences, Math, Science
and Technology, and Reading.
Children receive small group
or individual instruction
designed to help the child
access the curriculum at
their developmental level.
For those students who perform
at or near grade level,
there are three academic
classrooms designed to simulate
the typical public school
environment and prepare
the child for the return
to his/her local school
system. NECC’s Home-Based
and Preschool Intensive
Instruction Programs includes
pre-academic skill building
to prepare even the youngest
children to be successful
learners in typical classroom
settings. |

Communication
Skills |
| |
Communication
is an essential skill in
building greater independence.
Through communication we
can connect with others,
express ourselves, be recognized
and so much more. To assist
students in building stronger
communication skills, NECC’s
speech and language specialists
develop individualized communication
programs and consult with
the student, teachers and
family to implement the
program throughout the student’s
day. Increased vocabulary,
improved intelligibility,
greater comprehension and
polished conversation skills
are among the main focuses
of the program. For students
who need additional resources,
our specialists have experience
and expertise in the use
of alternative and augmentative
communication (AAC) systems
such as object boards, sign
language, communication
books and electronic devices. |

Social
Skills |
| |
Many children
with autism/PPD have difficulty
interacting with other people.
This can range from the
child avoiding eye contact
to increased solitary play
to exhibiting self-stimulatory,
aggressive or self-injurious
behaviors. NECC’s
goal is to help the child
to understand the value
of interacting appropriately
with other people. Through
reinforcement programs and
teaching of joint attention
skills, cooperative game
playing, and problem-solving
techniques, we build the
skills necessary for students
to be successful participants
in school, home and community
life. |

Life
Skills |
| |
NECC’s
core skill curriculum ensures
that students achieve as
much independence as possible
with tasks involved in daily
living. Acquisition of grooming,
hygiene, and leisure skills,
and transfer of those skills
into a daily routine prepares
students to be successful
in less restrictive environments.
Students in the residential
programs also focus on the
development of appropriate
life skills in the home
and community. |

|
| |
Vocational
Skills |
| |
In order to
build a foundation for eventual
success in the workplace,
NECC’s younger students
are given instruction in
activities that develop
general work habits and
a positive attitude toward
employment. NECC’s
older students are introduced
to the concept of a career
development plan and participate
in vocational instruction.
Students are given the opportunity
to be involved in supported
employment within the community
for 15 to 40 hours each
week. On-the-job training
and ongoing support services
are given to further develop
job skills and encourage
successful relationships
with supervisors and coworkers. |

A.P.E./Occupational
Therapy |
| |
NECC’s curriculum
stresses the importance
of physical strength and
well-being and how they
relate to everyday life
through its Adapted Physical
Education A.P.E and Occupational
Therapy Programs. Through
A.P.E and Occupational Therapy
students receive instruction
in activities that enforce
the benefits of physical
activity while continuing
to support all other aspects
of learning and living.
Using adaptive equipment,
teachers work with the children
and strive to improve motor
skills, coordination, fitness,
and the child’s enjoyment
of the activities themselves.
Students also learn and
practice the rules and requirements
for organized sports and
train for local and regional
Special Olympics events.
Plans are underway for an
extensive pool facility
to be added to the campus.
Of course, as with any undertaking
of this magnitude, fundraising
is necessary to assist us
in making the pool facility
a reality. To help us in
this endeavor, please click
