On
Friday, November 18, The New England
Center for Children (NECC) celebrated
our 30th Anniversary with a Gala at
the Boston Convention & Exhibition
Center. The Gala raised $300,000,
the largest single fundraising event
in NECC’s history. Over 500
corporate sponsors, parents, staff
and friends of NECC gathered to celebrate
this milestone event for NECC. Dan
Rea served as Master of Ceremonies
and former Governor Michael Dukakis
was presented with the “Children
of Promise” award. Speakers
included Event Chair Robert E. Smyth,
President and CEO of Citizens Bank
and lead sponsor of the event; Vincent
Strully, founder and Chief Executive Officer & Founder
of The New England Center for Children;
John Marston, Chairman of the NECC
Board of Directors and Vice President
of Commercial and Industrial Lending
at Eastern Bank; former Governor Michael
Dukakis; and Joanne Niedermeyer, parent
of an NECC student. Scott Lawson,
a former NECC student, was on hand
to present Gov. Dukakis with the “Children
of Promise” award. Senator and
Mrs. Edward Kennedy served as Honorary
Chairs of the event. A video of Senator
Kennedy speaking on behalf of NECC
and a letter written about Governor
Dukakis were presented at the event.
Entertainment
at the event was provided by students
of Worcester Polytechnic Institute
under the direction of Richard Falco,
professor of music studies at WPI.
WPI provides the entertainment at
NECC’s annual “A Night
of Music” and again generously
donated their time to perform at this
event. WPI provided a string quartet,
a jazz combo and a big band with vocals
provided by Linda Dagnello, a well
known jazz vocalist.
The
event featured a silent auction, cocktails
and dinner, followed by a student
video, live auction, dancing and dessert.
The proceeds from the event will directly
benefit The New England Center for
Children’s Annual Fund which
allows us to provide our students
with the learning environment they
need to gain greater independence.
Past support of NECC’s Annual
Fund has enabled us to purchase new
treadmills, computers, learning software,
and playground equipment.
