In this section, Director of Family Services Rich Martin and Family Services Specialist Jeannette Gould answer general questions about NECC asked by parents of NECC students. We will compile a list of FAQs and answer several commonly asked questions every few weeks.

How are "students of the month" selected?
Admissions Coordinator Ali-Elizabeth Held asks Coordinators, Program Specialists, and Program Directors for nominations. Teams review students who have done well on objectives, made improvements in behavior, or have had a notable achievement in the period since the last student of the month award. Students from all programs can be nominated and approximately five students receive the award each time. Chief Executive Officer and Founder Vincent Strully awards the students at an event attended by students, staff and family members. Students receive a small gift of their choice and their profiles with photos are proudly displayed in the school so that students, staff, parents, and visitors can read about their achievements.
Do teachers receive any training to drive the large vans?
Vocational Services Director Michelle Klein serves in the role of van training specialist. All new employees who will be driving vans receive a two-part training: a one-hour lecture based on insurance company driver training, and (commentary driving.) During commentary driving, a trained driver accompanies the trainee as the trainee drives. The trainee describes everything she/he is seeing and doing as driving and the trainer coaches and evaluates. These sessions occur before teachers drive with students. This program, and data on its effectiveness, was the subject of a staff training presentation at the Association of Behavior Analysis conference several years ago.
Will NECC continue to sponsor family swim days next year?
Yes, in fact we're adding a third family swim day during the 2009-2010 school year. Check the family activities section of the Calendar for dates. Feedback from families who have attended has been universally very enthusiastic.
What types of events occur throughout the year?
NECC's Family Services Department sponsors an Annual Parents' Night, parent education and training workshops, a siblings' group, and discussion groups for parents. Our Development Department sponsors a golfing event, an annual 5K Walk/Run, and, in conjunction with our Parents' Organization, an Annual Night of Music. Our Parents' Organization also sponsors staff appreciation events, and social gatherings for parents and children including an annual Family Fest. Events are posted on our calendar.
