Graduate Internships

Fill out an Internship Application

At The New England Center for Children, graduate internships, practicum and field placements can be designed to meet the academic requirements of each student’s college or university in a variety of academic areas. Recent students have completed placements in counseling psychology, school psychology, special education and speech and language pathology.

Our student population present interns with severe emotional, behavioral, language and educational challenges. Two specific programs are offered:

Internship in Communication Disorders
Students from graduate programs in Communication Disorders at Emerson College, Northeastern University, Worcester State College and MGH Institute of Health Professions, a Massachusetts General Hospital affiliate, have taken advantage of NECC's practical training opportunities with the following benefits:

  • The experience offers students an opportunity to learn and observe a wide variety of language intervention techniques that serve to improve an individual’s communicative skills and enrich the individual’s understanding and use of language.

  • Interns have frequent opportunities to collaborate with other disciplines such as applied behavior analysts, occupational therapists, special educators, and medical staff.

  • Interns refine their diagnostic skills through formal measures, such as standardized testing and discrete trials, and informal measures, such as observations of an individual’s communicative behavior across contexts and people.

  • Interns gain experience in providing treatment and intervention in a variety of settings – in the classroom, residence, and in 1:1 and group-setting formats.

  • Interns are provided hands-on practical experience in areas such as incidental teaching, electronic AAC devices, aural rehabilitation, and the use of picture supports in the classroom.
  • Internships can be designed to meet the specific academic requirements of the institution with supervision provided by licensed professionals.

We encourage students interested in either of the above opportunities to contact us.
