Finding items, activities, or events to use as potential reinforcers is crucial when teaching children with autism. Many educators try to identify what a student prefers by asking a parent or caregiver what the person likes. However, studies have shown that these methods may not always identify a person's most potent reinforcer, and you are more likely to identify effective reinforcers by conducting preference assessments.
