Teaching Play and Social Skills

AUDIENCE: Educators, paraprofessionals, and other staff members addressing the social and play skills of children with autism and related disorders
This workshop will give participants an overview of a variety of methods to teach play skills and social skills to children with autism. Information on how to use photographic activity schedules to increase independent play and video modeling strategies to increase pretend play will also be incorporated. An overview of how to identify and teach beginning-level social skills such as joint attention, eye contact, and imitation skills will be included. Participants will learn how to incorporate incidental teaching across the day to target social skills and how to organize and run peer tutoring and reverse integration sessions involving children with autism and peer models.
