The following workshop will be presented by experienced clinicians actively involved in behavior analytic research. Training topics are aligned with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Task List.

Scheduled Workshops:

Ethical Issues in Behavior: The BCBA® Code of Conduct
Presenter: William L. Holcomb, Ph.D., BCBA
When: February 8, 2008
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Knowledge of ethical guidelines and common ethical conflicts is crucial for the practitioner in the field and the lab. This workshop will focus on the guidelines of ethical behavior as outlined in the Task List for the BCBA® exam and the BACB® Guidelines for Responsible Conduct. Adventure, Misadventure and Speculation. Current Trends in Autism Research
Presenter: William H. Ahearn, Ph.D., BCBA
When: February 8, 2008
Time: 12:30 pm. - 3:30 p.m.

Recent reports have generated a great deal of publicity for autism. Increases in prevalence are currently being debated as either pointing to some environmental trigger or being the product of diagnostic substitution. This presentation will summarize the empirical evidence surrounding this speculation and forward some predictions on future findings in these areas. Clinicians have also made many discoveries on critical responses for children with autism spectrum disorders. A review of social deficits in autism, including joint attention and social reciprocity, and successful teaching procedures for social behavior will be presented.

Assessment and Treatment of Joint Attention in Young Children with Autism
Presenter: Rebecca P.F. MacDonald, Ph.D., BCBA
When: March 7, 2008
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Joint attention has been identified as one of the earliest emerging social behaviors in typically developing children and is often a deficit in young children with autism. This session will present a model for evaluating children's responsiveness to joint attention bids as well as their ability to initiate joint attention. The relationship between socially mediated consequences and their function as reinforcers for children with autism will be described. Case examples of intervention procedures to establish joint attention initiations will be presented.

Not only does it feel good, but it can get me more: Stereotypy in Children with ASD
Presenter: William H. Ahearn, Ph.D., BCBA
When: March 7, 2008
Time: 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Though most stereotypic responding shows evidence of being related to the sensory consequences it produces, stereotypy can contact other consequences. Stereotypy is different from person to person but procedures that present appropriate functional environments tend to readily foster appropriate behavior. This presentation will discuss several forms of stereotypy (motor, vocal, and echolalic) and show how they can present differently across a number of children. Successful interventions, including response competition, response interruption, and communication training, will be described across a number of intervention studies.
